BMW K1600B 2023 motorcycle trip day 3 ending in a motorcycle crash
A great day of riding through Yellowstone ending in a motorcycle crash after hitting some gravel from a previous rain storm that had washed the road out. Hard to see the gravel because it was the same color as the pavement but believe me it was there and it was like riding over ball bearings.

i agree. Pirelli should drop those 2 parallel grooves on front tyre. I had the same issue driving across Europe and those grooves interferes with painted lines or grooves in the road itself and catch on to it... And sometimes it throws you off guard. I don't like the front tyre. Its a safety issue for me.
Thanks for posting park attractions and the road hazard and crash. I've been riding an '06 r1200rt with Kenda KM1 tires which stick like glue on clean pavement, but I'd guess would slide just as quick cornering on gravel sprinkles. Good luck on finding some rehab exercise routine. Canoe paddling for an hour is good for upper body and hand grip.
What was the cause of the wreck?
I usually brake before curves that look like they have some liquid spilled on them or variations in the color of the road. Next time, it's important to reduce speed a bit and avoid leaning the motorcycle too much. Good luck!
What a bummer man. And to have that cop give you a ticket is beyond shitty. Being that most of your injuries were in your chest area have you considered an airbag vest for future rides? I wear a Klim and it gives me some peace of mind.
Did you do a run with the db killers out only on 2 pipes not all 4? Just to see how the drone at speed changes?
Wow! That was a very spectacular crash! Yeah, I couldn't tell the gravel from the road as well. I'm glad you're ok and wish you a very speedy recovery. Hope you get back on two-wheels again soon. Any updates on the bike and what the insurance "man" has said?

Slip On or full?
Glad you’re ok brother. Was there something on the road or did it just shift in you?
Nice ride
Nice video
The video shows some fine grey gravel on your riding line. Your front tyre washed out on the gravel and then secured traction again once you cleared the gravel line, thus causing the mid corner tank slapper. Your speedo shows that your speed was fine for the conditions. It’s just one of those things, not much you can do about it. It looks like you may have instinctively grabbed a handful of front brake and if so, you might have stayed upright with more gentle break application but it’s difficult to be certain on that point. Well done for sharing the video - we can all learn from the accident.
Cool video. What make is the tinted front screen on your K1600b? Looks great.
cool video. What is the brand of tinted windshield are you using?
Cool scenery
Goddamn that came out of nowhere. Glad you are ok. What happened? Just too low of a corner and the peg dug in? Is the bike repaired? Hope you keep riding
Glad you’re OK. I also have a K1600B. I’m in Chehalis, WA. Always looking for a riding buddy. Reach out if you like.
Glad you’re ok. Gravel could get any of us. Protective gear did as much as it could. I’m on a Grand America and have lost the back tire a little on gravel, but never the front. It happens, and thats a rare recovery without a high side at speed.
Glad you’re ok, my mate did similar on his k1600 and has 7 broken ribs
nice trip!!
Thanks for share, good trip, good bike, California love ^^
AGAIN GREAT VIDEO !!!
Sorry ya had an off. Gear did well and saved you from really getting skinned up. Shoei helmet held up as well. Hope you're still on the mend. What month were you there? I ask as I'm planning on a trip out to that area this summer. Early June. TIA Take care!
Luv your videos. Hate that you wrecked.. hope you are doing good.. hope to see you riding one day.. stay safe brother
Way more than my touring Harley
Looks rad to
Fuggin sounds good
Great Video !!!
Very nice video. Maybe post another version at regular speed? Or maybe edit and play at normal speed? I'd like to see it all! Thanks!
Great music.. great video
Great video.. great music. Stay safe brother
Very cool video.. very pretty country
I wonder if that type crash is result of front suspension geometry. I’ve read people say the front end doesn’t have any feel when things go soft. The wheel is offset from the steering pin quite a ways so the back and forth movement could be a result of that.
Great videos! I have traveled some of these roads a few times and never get tired of them. Thanks for sharing that awful crash and the aftermath. I sure hope you're healing quickly. Pretty sorry deed for the Trooper to write you a ticket. I don't see how this helped make the road safer for motorists. Happy Trails!
Love the 191 north of west Yellowstone is sick rode it this past summer
The sad part of all this is that the crash will be the overwhelming memory of the trip. Believe me, I've been there. A ride in the back of an ambulance is no way to end a trip. Glad you're on the mend.
I can't believe all the posts saying, "why did you lose control, what went wrong?" People must be blind. Look at 29:16, the gravel right in the center of the lane is clearly visible. Hitting that leaned over at speed and your screwed.
Have your thoughts changed on the helmet now that you ha e a few years on it? Im looking at getting this same helmet.
I crashed my bike over the summer and the helmet definitely did it job. Took a good impact into the asphalt but I didn’t have a concussion or any damage to my jaw/teeth or anything like that. Definitely my favorite helmet for riding. I like it so much I already bought a new one.
Was there small gravel spread across the road? I couldn’t see it in the video but the afternoon lighting can hide it.
Best helmet on the market. Hands down.
Glad to hear that you are on your way to a fully recovery, I'm one who knows that permanent injuries, are permanent. I traveled that same highway about 8 years ago from Yellowstone, thru Greybull to Sheridan, and the next week on to KY on my R1150RS. I stopped on the mountain east of Greybull a couple of Harley riders asked me if the storm had cleared out. They made the wrong assumption about the direction I was traveling. The storm was ahead to the East, had they came from the East they would have known. I can remember descending the mountain West of Sheridan in places the hail had accumulated 1" = 2" inches deep. We ride for different reasons, and we have to expect, and try to be prepared for anything, again, glad to see that you got to the end of the journey in fine shape. Thumbs down to the state trooper.
Hey, i had a question about the front suspension on the b model in particular. I've heard some mention of the front end having a tendency to slightly wander at freeway speeds. I have asked a couple other guys on UA-cam if thier bikes have this issue. Both said no, everything is solid. Have you ever noticed even a slight bit of this on your bike at freeway speed? Just curious, i really love the b and the gt, but was turned off by the b's lower governed top speed. Supposedly attributed to the instability in the front suspension at higher speed. I know the gt does 150 or more. That engine is so magnificent i would hate to see it shackled to 105 or whatever it is.
When I had the stock windscreen installed, and in the fully up position, I would get a weird like slow motion wobble but after putting on a smaller aftermarket and keeping it down when I was at high-speed, it was Rock. Mine had a speed governor to 130 and it was rocksolid at that speed.
@weldmandingo aahh crap....now the b is back on my list, lol. It's between a Challenger, the K 1600 GT, or the B. Thanks for the feedback sir, much appreciated.
I'm glad you're alive. Thankfully, you had full gear. I played it in slow mo and you can see that it is the surface that caused the accident. Hopefully, you'll recover soon.
Really sorry, that just sucks, gravel over the road I’m guessing nearly did that myself, fingers crossed your all better soon and back on two wheels
Great to see you back out on another trip, thanks for the videos
Excellent my friend!!
Looked like gravel! We've had a riders go down way back the Sierras on a pass and luckily we carry two way communication devices.
Glad you're ok man!! A pneumothorax is the real shit. Also glad to see what looked like Kriega luggage. Yours is the first I have ever seen and I LOVE my gear. Hope you'll be back at it in '24.
close call mate, glad your on the mend...you hit gravel ?
Yeah, road washed out a few days before that and there was some gravel left on the road but it was really hard to see because it’s the same color as the pavement
nothing you could have done there mate, even watching the video you couldn't see it..@@weldmandingo
